Lorena managed to find this important tidbit, which offers some relief to overland travelers returning to the U.S.Documentary Requirements for Entry To The United States –  Important Note: The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will soon require all travelers to and from the Americas, the Caribbean, and Bermuda to have a passport or other accepted form of documentation to enter or reenter the United States.   The program will be rolled out in phases. The proposed timeline is as follows:December 31, 2006: Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.December 31, 2007: Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.For more information, please visit the State Department travel website at or the U.S. Department of Homeland Security website at To apply for a passport, U.S. citizens can visit or call the U.S. Passport Office at 1-877-4USA-PPT or TDD/TYY: 1-888-874-7793.
