Our trials and travails finding camping in Oaxaca last year had us lamenting the closure of the popular San Felipe Campground. I’m happy to report we’ve just received word that the campground is open again, under new ownership. Located four miles north of downtown and adjacent to Benito Juarez National Park, the reopened campground features WiFi, hot showers, water and electricity at every campsite, and many sites with sewer hook-up. I posed a few questions to the new owners, Del and Kate Highfield, long-time RVers who have been in the campground business for more than 20 years. Del and Kate say they were attracted to the Oaxaca area for its diverse culture. “There’s everything here…from the artisans in the mountain villages, to the performance theatres in the city, to the incredible variety of excellent restaurants and famous cuisine,” Kate said. When I asked them about their favorite aspects of the campground, she answered,
Driving directions to San Felipe Campground (from campground website): “From Hwy 190 (Pan American Highway): Go North when you see the baseball stadium (which will be on the SE corner) on Av. Heroico Colegio Militar (pass a large grocery store – Soriana – which will be on your right-hand side. This road becomes Maritas de Chicago. Continue straight through the roundabout a few blocks past the Soriana store. You will pass an intersection with traffic lights. When you come to the next intersection with traffic lights, where the road ends, take the immediate right turn. This road is called Calz. San Felipe del Agua. Continue driving uphill. This road is now called Calle Hildalgo. After you pass the Los Laureles Hotel on the right, take the next turn left onto del Pasa Juego, a steep downhill road. Drive downhill to the end of this street. This road turns slightly left where you see the large Salud Sal Felipe del Agua sign. Stay left one more block to the end of the street. Turn Right (De Iturbide), cross a small bridge, continue up the hill ( street name changes to Camino a La Chigulera). You will see the San Felipe Campground sign on the left. If you reach the top of the mountain you have gone too far!”
