Taxi! According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, December 31, 2012 will be the last day of service for the approximately 3,500 Volkswagen Bugs, known as Vochos, still in service as taxis in Mexico City. I guess the Mayans were wrong. The world will end on December 31!

Politics: Mexico’s ruling National Action Party (PAN) named Josefina Vasquez Mota as their nominee for president. She currently sits 7 points behind the leader, Enrique Pena Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). If Vasquez Mota, who has been gaining momentum of late, wins the July 1 elections, she will be the first woman to be president of Mexico.

Meteorológico: The Latin American Herald Tribune reports that the World Bank has loaned Mexico $300 million to combat the effects of Global Warming. Mexico’s Social Development Secretariat hopes that the efforts resulting from the loan will aid approximately 2,000 rural indigenous communities.

In related news, Mexico has invested $250 million in insurance against climactic disasters in 2012, a significant increase from 2011. The insurance is intended to aid in the feeding and care of livestock threatened by a drought affecting 19 of the 32 Mexican states. Effecting mostly northern and central Mexico, the drought has been ongoing since May of last year.
