The price of fuel in Mexico has increased as follows: Magna, up 8.2% to 8.44 pesos/liter = $2.51 per gallon (peso at 12.72 per U.S. dollar on 14 August 2010) Premium, up 3.9% to 9.94 pesos/liter = $2.96 per gallon Diesel, up 7.8% to 8.80 pesos/liter = $2.62 per gallon To calculate fuel prices I used the following formula: divide 3.785 (liters) by today’s peso exchange rate (example: 12.72) and multiply this by the current price-per-liter (example: 8.44 pesos for […]

A reader writes: Since we live in sunny Arizona, my wife and I are looking for locations with at least relatively cool climates to get away from our very toasty temperatures from May to October during the summer. Can anyone suggest places in Mexico’s highlands where we might get some respite? It’s hard for us to be gone more than three weeks at a time because of medical and other commitments, so is there anyplace within three to five days moderate […]
Any suggestions for a bank in the U.S. which has a sister bank in Mexico? We are hoping to save on those expensive withdrawal fees!
Good news for Mexico-bound travelers, bad news for most Mexican citizens and investors: The peso, the worst performer among the world’s most-traded currencies in the past six months, will weaken another 15 percent by year-end as the nation’s twin deficits swell, said Rogelio Ramírez de la O, the economist who predicted the 1994 devaluation. The peso will slide to 18.2 per dollar [From The News]
The peso fell to near a record low as a report showing a tumble in U.S. home sales added to evidence the recession in the world’s largest economy is deepening. The peso dropped 0.8 percent to 14.9498 per U.S. dollar at 5 p.m. New York time, from 14.8275 Tuesday. [From The News]
Here’s a question from Whitney that you might like to comment on: Just recently discovered that I can get to San Diego rather cheaply. I’m looking at meeting my 67-year-old mom there, then heading to Baja for a few days of R&R. I’ve traveled Mexico before (with People’s Guide in hand!), but not Baja. What affordable, easy-to-get-to locations do you suggest I look into? She has arthritis and can’t tolerate really long bus rides, but is otherwise very active and […]
MX banks won’t exchange dollars!?! Hi Carl, We have had a home in Alamos, Sonora for 18 years. Recently the local banks and those in Navajoa stopped exchanging dollars for pesos unless you have an account and then they’ll only do less than $200. Is this just a local thing, or have you heard about this in other places? I’m guessing it’s got to do with the slide in the peso, but it’s hell on tourism and a big pain […]
The value of Mexico’s peso dropped to 14.1-per-dollar in the last week of January 09. I got just over 10 pesos per dollar in November ’08.
