Lorena and I rate the mountainous southern states of Oaxaca and Chiapas very high among our personal favorites. Dominated by the Sierra Madre and scored by countless deep canyons, the scenery in this region is truly breathtaking. In addition to its natural attractions, the southern highlands includes many of Mexico’s most traditional and colorful Indian groups, plus several notable archaeological sites. Access is easy: The city of Oaxaca is only a few hundred miles south of Mexico City.
Note: Between the Zapatistas in Chiapas and the strikes and election disputes in Oaxaca, this region is politically volatile. Don’t let this information stop you from visiting, but keep your ear to the ground.
